Installation view Frieze Frame, Frieze Art Fair, London, 2011 Megan Francis Sullivan’s work revolves around an interest in processes of mimesis, specifically in the transfer of knowledge and form, identity, and ultimately expressions of desire through forms of reproduction and repetition. Integral is the photocopy as reference to source material, yet also as signifier of distance or alienation (as well as desire) associated with a source. Avoiding an identifiable style or medium, Sullivan mimetically shifts from photorealistic painting, abstract sculpture, gestural drippings, copy transfer, video – at once akteur and observer. For the presentation at the frieze frame section, Sullivan presents a new series of works including sculptures, gouache on paper and a video. Using images from research into 1970s gay men‘s magazines, a new series of gouache on paper plays letters with images, recalling works of John Baldessari. Issues of repetition, visibility and form manifest in the juxtaposition of abstract sculptures with the illustrative images. The colored and patterned frame-like structures can be moved around, overlapped and stacked. By ‚reinacting‘ pages of the magazine into a video made with ballet dancers, the artist revitalizes gestures from the magazines in a collective appropriation. The dancers approach the poses not as characters, but as bodies that are both formal and alluring. |
